Robert McNamara’s publishers and contemporary filmmakers with an agenda did not invent the term, “the fog of war.” They stole if from the Prussian intellectual and military commander, whose book, On War, has captivated a contemporary audience. It has been applied to business, sports, and a host of other disciplines. I think it fits well […]

Gone West

I’m writing from beautiful Carlsbad, California on the first full day of our annual visit to our timeshare at Aviara. The weather is perfect, the accommodations the same comfortable setting we’ve enjoyed for seven years now. Kathi’s mother joins us again from her home about 8 miles down the road in Oceanside. Chemo still weighs […]

The Importance of Community

During my journey through cancer and chemo, convictions previously held have come to shout at me — fortunately in affirmation — along the way. Next to God as my Rock, the importance and power of community is perhaps what is being most strongly reinforced, encouraged, practiced. It matters that a group of guys dial into […]

Today started as all Mondays do for me, with the guys in the Monday Morning Men’s group. After a weekend that was totally exhausting and chemically challenged, it was really good to see the guys, though SAW and Swany were away. Long and short of it, the morning meetings are ones of growing candor, honesty, […]

Moving is seldom a highlight of life for us. Anticipating a new home is fun. Enjoying a new home after you’re settled can be a joy. Packing and moving, well, that’s in another category. A snapshot of the outside of the new home, one story for the first time in 15 years (and happily so), […]

Saw my oncologist yesterday and he reported progress on reducing the size of my cancerous lymph glands (confined to abdomen). Normal size is 1 (cm, mm, yard?). On July 12 scan (at diagnosis stage) my largest were 3.45; now largest are 2.5. Overall progress looks good — within expected response. My white cell count continues […]

"Vas you dere Charlie?"

As he told one over-the-top tale after another, Baron Munchausen would often encounter an incredulous audience. To the puzzled and the skeptics, the Baron’s retort was always, "Vas you dere Charlie?" Well, I’m not that skeptical, and I hope I’m not too over-the-top, but I would like to know if you’re dere Charlie! So please […]

Today I had my "halfway through chemo" CT scan which should show if we are making progress in the war against cancer. I find out the results of the scan on Wednesday, October 19, during my regular, right before chemo visit with my oncologist. That day will be chemo treatment 4 of what I now […]

Amazing Grace

Three years ago, as I was finishing work for Max McLean, I got a call from John E. Walvoord, my old friend and former business partner. We had gone separate ways in January 1986 in what was the business equivalent of divorce. It was a difficult time for us both, compounded by the fact that […]
